When running Ubuntu is WINE an emulator, is it legal?

If it is not an emulator then what makes it different from one?

Yes, its legal.

What you do with it may or may not be, but thats besides the point.

The WINE devs stress that WINE "Is Not an Emulator", that its a compatibility layer for Windows applications on Unix.

As a result, applications running in WINE are capable of running as fast as they can on Windows (in practice, it may not be the case).

Yea, what TheProducer said. They have finally pased the 1.0 release. Its not perfect, but is useful if you need the occasional windows app. I know anim8or works decently in it. Your milieage will very, you will see. Also are you considering using Ubuntu. If you are, thats pretty sweet. Ive been using it myself for a while now, and am considering ubuntu server for my house.

So basicly it is an emulator, but it has some compatability layer that does not mimic but only translate. Am I right?

Pretty much its a layer that interprets a windows binary in a way linux can read it, sorta.
