Stylized Male Head

Stylized Male Head image

Apparently being sick has its benefits.  I was able to squeeze in some spare time to get some modeling done.  Hopefully I can keep it up and be inspired to use any free time I get at home to work on this.  It's nothing big, but I enjoy doing at least some art.

The model is based off of a concept I drew in school one day.  If you remember my creation of Grunk (the CGN mascot), this character was the other one I was deciding between modeling for the challenge.

As a quick note, I do notice there is a slight imperfection to the side of his nose.  This will hopefully be gone once I model the nostrils.

Enough talk from me, let me know what you think!

Cheers

pretty cool. do you plan on animating it or doing other poses or anything. the bridge on the nose between the eyes looks kind of sharp.

I would love to see a wireframe of the head, are you still using anim8or or have you moved on to 3ds max or something else?

rocknroll:  I hope you get better.  I'm still not fully recovered but I've been back in school for a little while.  What exactly do you mean by smoother?  In which areas?

Scorpia:  Thanks, currently the plan is to simply model and render him.  If I get more time perhaps I'll create a full figure.  In regards to the bridge of the nose, it is a bit sharp, I did it simply for stylistic purposes.  Is it too sharp?

RnDr FOX: Here's that wireframe!  I'm stil using Anim8or, I hope to move on soon though.  I have done some modeling in 3ds max, hopefully I can get more into it soon.

yes, im better :) about the smooth part, along the sides of the nose and the eyebrows. it just looks too sharp and unatural

Have fun!

I kindof like the stylized harder edges, its a style you see a bit more often lately, but I like it.

Mainly, I think the guy needs a bit more character.. he looks fairly neutral.. but i see a bit of a mischivious look in his eyes, maybe you can accentuate a certain look a bit more with the positioning of the eyebrows, the shape of the eyes, size of the mouth, etc.

Nice and simple model though, even though you don't really have edge looping going on, but if youre not going to animate that won't be a problem!

I hope you will haev a bit more time to work on this and make it look really cool :) (it already does, but even more so! haha )

See ya

I know it is not exactly like your drawing but I would love to see some wild hair on your guy.

How did you go about modeling him?

It looks like on the top it looks like a circle/sphere and did you edge extrusion on the rest?

It looks to me that he started with the forehead, and a square plane, and then he extruded it. But that's just what I think.

 Thanks guys,

Rocknroll:  Thanks for the insight.  I like the hard eges on the eyebrow and nose ridges, but I think you're right that it's too sharp where the eye sockets go around to the side.  I'll try to make it become smoother sooner, I think it will help it look a little more natural (though stylized is what I'm going for).

Simon:  Thanks mate!  I do agree he doesn't have much character right now.  I think after I model him I'll give him some morph targets or something and try to give him some fun expressions.  As for the edge looping, you're right, especially around the mouth area.  I think I may give him a loop or two more around there to make him animateable or at least poseable!

Ha thanks!  The year is starting to come to a close, so after finals and all comes summer and I'm a free(er) bird!

RnDr FOX:  Thanks, that sounds like a fun idea.  I'll give it a go and see how it looks once I get to that point!

Here's the jist of what I did for the modeling so far:

I started out with a cylinder and a sphere, and blocked out the general form of the head.  All I wanted was a good 3D reference for myself as I only had a side view and wanted to make sure everything was nice and smooth around.  I used the sphere for the bulbous part of the nose.  I then actually started with the eyes, I'm not sure why but I tend to like starting with that area.  To create the eyes though I did start from scratch, I didn't use my 3D reference as a starting point.  I did poly-by-poly modeling to get the shape around, and tweaked it to fit th eyeball I put in, then used some edge extrusion.  Then I did the mouth the same basic way, then the nose, and began connecting the pieces to one another, cleaning up the edge loops etc.

Hope that's a good insight to you guys!
