Here's something I have been working on for a couple of weeks. It was created with max 9, mental ray and photoshop. This is my finnal render, but feel free to comment.
I really like the skin shader & the cloth material.
It mustve been a big effort to model that, but a nice result!
I still have to nitpick a bit though haha! (its in my nature)
- His lips look look very feminine , theyre probably too smooth or something, especially since hes in the army.
- I don't know if you used a reference for the proportions, but somehow the eyes look a tad small and not in the center of the head. I know people have different features so if its from your reference than its all good.
It's awesome , and especially way better than i ever could do.. so congrats on the great image!
My first crit would be that this isn't up in the gallery yet
Seriously though, really amazing image! I love the little detailed touches you put in such as the very slight shaved look, the button-hole on the jacket and the slight dof. Great skin shader as well, as Simon already said. The modeling is as well very solid.
As Simon, I have a tendency to give criticism no matter the beauty of the image. My first comment would be that the coat itself looks a bit stiff. Perhaps its me, but it feels like it should be much more relaxed, perhaps even slightly crumpled. Other than that I can't think of anything else that hasn't been said.
adding to floyd's comment about the eyes, maybe you could add some of the red veins on the sides of the eye. (i'm not sure how that's called)
it seems to me that the iris is too small compared to the eyelids. and maybe it just me, but the eyelashes may be too long that it makes me think he's feminine.
i would like to see the wireframe. after weeks of modeling faces without a reference gave me frustration, i would really like to see how others make faces. just for reference and maybe i could find a more recent work to study on.
Thankyou for the kind words, I'm glad to here you like it! Modeling was difficult, but it was the eye and the skin texture that stumped me. It took 4/5ths as long as it did to do everything else.

Nice work starbuck! I directly recognized your style in it. I love the slight blur, really gives a nice effect.
The eyes still look a bit dead (uncanny valley i know), it's hard to get those right. Still really good job.
